On June 1, 2021, Falcon introduced the exciting new version of the Listen module to the Falcon platform, Listen | Powered by Brandwatch. You can find out more about the release and FAQs about getting access here. With the new version of the Listen module, you can utilize many similar features to Classic Listen along with some great new additions, such as new filter options, enhanced search previews, new visual insights, and more data for your mentions.
In this article, find out more about the differences between Classic Listen and New Listen.
Topics and Projects vs. Search Queries
In Classic Listen, you may be familiar with creating Topics and Projects. When you create a Listen Topic, you will enter a query to pull in a set of mentions and insights based on your keywords and hashtags. Multiple Topics (each pulling in their own set of mentions) will be kept within Projects. For a full overview of Topics and Projects, please visit the introduction to Listen Classic here.
In New Listen, instead of Topics, you will create Searches. Like Topics, you create a search by entering your keywords, topics, hashtags, or phrases. Your search will then index matching mentions from over 100 million sources and display a full overview of insights along with sentiment, emotion, language, and location for each mention where possible.
There are two types of searches available in New Listen: Quick Searches and Saved Searches. When you create a search in New Listen, by default, you will create a Quick Search first. Like a preview, a Quick Search displays a snapshot of matching mentions and insights. If you’re happy with your results, you can then decide to save your search, allowing you to gather more information and mentions, create alerts, share with the team, and much more. While you can’t house your Saved Searches under individual folders (like Projects), all Saved Searches can easily be located under the Saved Searches tab.
Topic Preview vs. Quick Search
In Classic Listen, when you build a new Topic, you will see a brief preview of the mentions your query will index. The preview displayed in Classic Listen is not a complete list of matching mentions over any set period. Instead, the preview is based on matching mentions which had previously been indexed into Falcon based on Topics created by others. Before deciding to save your Topic, you will be unable to view any available insights.
In New Listen, when you create a new Quick Search, you will have access to the last one month of data, all matching mentions from the last month, and a view of most available insights.
Topic vs. Saved Search
In Classic Listen, when you decide to save your Topic, you will have access to matching mentions and insights going forward in time only. You can view all available insights, compare your topics, view in TV mode, and analyze all available mentions. Find out more about the available views in Listen here.
In New Listen, you will have immediate access to the last one year of complete data including all matching mentions and insights. You can choose to customize your timerange, filter your data, and view all available insights graphs from the moment you save your search.
Mention Limits vs. Search Limits
In Classic Listen, your organization will be limited to a select number of mentions per month as defined in your Falcon contract. The usage of your mentions is not limited to any number of Topics, meaning you could create one Topic which pulls in all available monthly mentions, or several Topics which each contribute to the total. Once you reach the limit, you will no longer index mentions until the next calendar month.
In New Listen, you will not be limited to any number of mentions on a monthly basis. However, you will have a capped number of Saved Searches based on your Falcon contract. In addition, while most searches in Listen will not experience any reduction in mentions, queries with an extremely high volume of mentions may notice a sample rate in the number of mentions visible.
While Saved Searches are limited as per your Falcon contract, Quick Searches are unlimited. You can use Quick Searches for quick insights on any given topic or brand without having to contribute to the Saved Search cap.

User Role Capabilities
In Classic Listen, it’s possible for any Falcon user with a user role of Team Leader or Admin to create and edit Projects and Topics. For all other users, it’s only possible to view existing Projects and Topics.
In New Listen, any Falcon user can create Quick Searches. Only Team Leaders and Admins can save searches as a Saved Search, though any Falcon user can view, filter, and export existing Saved Searches. Building Advanced Queries
Similar in both Classic and New Listen, it’s possible to create advanced search queries using Boolean Operators. You can find the complete guide to creating advanced queries for each version of Listen below.
While many operators are available in each type of Listen, New Listen offers a much more dynamic range of options for location specification. An in-depth XLS sheet of codes for many global locations can be found in the guide above.
In New Listen, you can take advantage of a much more expansive database and list of potential sources, including the addition of Reddit, Tumblr, QQ, and YouTube. Check out the table below for an overview of what’s available in each version of Listen.

Viewing and Filtering Insights
Valuable insights for your mentions can easily be viewed in both Classic Listen and New Listen.
In Classic Listen, all insights for your indexed mentions can be viewed in Insights View. Across five different tabs, you can view an overview of volume and engagement, trending phrases and authors, sentiment insights and demographic statistics.
In New Listen, all insights are visible on one page by either creating a new search or viewing an existing search. Using the insight category headings at the top of the page, you can auto-scroll to applicable graphs which cover the following:
- Mentions count
- Word cloud
- Top measures
- Topic wheel
In New Listen, interactive graphs allow you to easily segment your mentions by clicking on applicable portions. For example, you could click on the Joy sentiment shown in the graph above to view only those mentions displaying that emotion. In addition, Listen’s peak detection can provide insights to potential sources and threads causing sharp rises in mentions, sentiment, or emotion.
In both version of the Listen tool, you can easily filter your insights and mentions based on various categories, such as keywords, sources, demographics, and sentiment.
However, New Listen features an increased number of available filters, such as Location, Twitter Account Type, Mention Type (e.g., original, reply, or share), and emotion. For many filter options, you can also choose between including or excluding mentions matching your chosen filter. In Classic Listen, all mentions will be indexed along with the following data where available:
- Author & handle
- Text & media
- Potential reach (Facebook and Twitter only)
- Total engagement (Twitter only)
- Engagement rate (Twitter only)
In New Listen, apart from Twitter engagement, all data listed above will be visible along with the following:
- Reach (Twitter, forums, reviews, news, and blogs)
- Location (specific city where available)
- Emotion (mentions in English only)
- Mention tags
All mentions are visible on the right-hand side of your Quick and Saved Searches and can be exported as described in the guide here.
In Classic Listen, it’s possible to set up email alerts for both Falcon users and external stakeholders. Classic Listen alerts are based on volume increase and can be customized based on sensitivity (e.g., a rise of 50%, 100%, or at least one new mention). In New Listen, you can choose to set up email alerts for both a rise in mentions and for customized, regular updates on your search.
As a bonus, alerts can easily be paused, and you can also create email alerts with consideration to any filters that have been applied to your Listen search. For example, you can choose to apply a Sentiment: Positive filter before creating your alert. Emails will then only be sent regarding any positive mentions which are indexed. Tracking Facebook and Instagram Data
It’s possible to monitor both Facebook and Instagram in both version of the Listen module. You can find an overview of what’s available for each version below:
In Classic Listen, it’s possible to track:
- Public Facebook Pages from those which Falcon is actively tracking (contact the Support Team to include more Pages).
- Instagram Hashtags.
In New Listen, by adding Targeted Data Sources, you can track any of the following:
- Any Facebook Pages which your Facebook user can see (even if geo-gated or restricted).
- Your owned Facebook Pages.
- Your owned Instagram Business Accounts
- Instagram Hashtags.
While a wider range of data is available to track in New Listen, your organization is limited to a maximum of 100 Targeted Data Sources. You can find out more about the Targeted Data Source limits here.
